Special Area of Conservation (SAC):
The SAC designations mean that we have local and national commitments to conserve the Mendip Limestone Grasslands and the North Somerset and Mendip Bats.
Those commitments require the conservation of Cheddar Gorge habitats and species.
Habitats and species being conserved in Cheddar Gorge:
- Semi-natural dry grasslands and scrub on limestone.
- European dry heaths.
- The trees and woodland plants on the slopes, screes and ravines.
- Caves not open to the public.
- Lesser horseshoe bats.
- Greater horseshoe bats.
